The Control Alt Delete Theorem

Postby pierski » Mon Feb 11, 2008 2:01 am

Screw Godwin's law! Here's Napierski's law:

"As an online comic becomes older, the probability of complaining about Ctrl+Alt+Del approaches one."

I find so much humor in the CAD bashing. Fine. There are people out there who have legitimate gripes about CAD and Tim Buckley. But a good chunk of the bitching comes from people who are jealous of what Buckley has achieved. Ctrl+Alt+Del is either the second or third largest webcomic in the world (behind only Penny Arcade or both Penny Arcade and XKCD). That's nothing to scoff at. And if you don't think he deserves it, it's definitely something to be envious of as well.

The problem is that every time you complain about Ctrl+Alt+Del on your site or a forum or send someone a link, you are bringing more traffic to the site. Odds are that the people already reading CAD are not reading your blog or if they do, it won't change their opinion. But since everyone has different opinions, its possible that you gained Ctrl+Alt+Del a new reader by exposing some to it that may not have been familiar to it before.

What I do if I don't like another webcomic is nothing. I don't mention it, I don't answer comments about it, and I definitely don't link to it. I promote what I like and not what I don't. Make sense?

First.

Hahaha, that was pretty damn funny. You've got some skill in imitating other art styles and yet you keep it unique somehow. Props to you.

I was going to do the comic in my art style, but it just seemed more effective to do it in CADs.

For a second I thought I'd stumbled onto CAD.... until I realised that the site design was different.... funny thing was I just came from CAD and I was slightly disappointed because his comic didn't make me laugh today but it was actually the perfect set-up for your's....

I was just thinking that, like some sort of art chameleon.

Personally I like CAD, it's always good for a quick laugh. I don't think there's that much wrong with it and it's awesome that he can make a living from it, it's, like, the greatest job ever!

You think C-A-D has more traffic than PVP? I'd find that a bit surprising.

CAD has somehow achieved the ultimate goal of any webcomic, it's found an audience of people that didn't before read webcomics, where as most comics trade readers that are already well aware of webcomics. Buckley's audience is a different audience then Kurtz gets, because they are different types of strips. In terms of success overall, I think Kurtz might have the win, but in internet traffic, CAD generally does better.

On another note, fantastic emulation of Buckley style, really just spot fucking on.

Years ago, CAD and PvP both used xTreme Tracking to track their traffic. PvP's highest day was around 165,000 and averaged about 110,000 a day (this statistic is no longer correct on the linked page). Ctrl+Alt+Del's highest day was around 320,000 and averaged around 250,000 a day (this statistic is no longer correct on the linked page). These stats, an understandance of web ranking sites really work and inside information from other webcomics are the basis for my assumption.

Buckley's a genius. Sure, the occasional romantic story arch can be annoying and cheesy, but at least the guy ALWAYS updates on time. And I'm sure that if for soem reason he didn't (like let's say he got hit by a truck and thrown in a meat grinder), then he'd post up a blog telling us.

Nothing is worse that a popular webcomic not updating and not telling its fans why *cough*VGCats*cough*.

And for the record, pierski, your ability to copy art styles is just freakishly awesome. It'd be great to see some more of those "what if..." strips.

Thanks. The problem with What if...?s is who's left? I don't want to do them for people who already did guest strips and they need to be from well-known gaming webcomics. If someone can give a good suggestion I'll listen.

Very funny. You really are good at the copying art styles thing.

And I don't see why some people hate CAD, or any webcomic for that matter. It's as you say Pierski, if you don't like something, just ignore it.

You could always do Cyanide & Happiness (www.explosm.net).
Not a gaming webcomic, but really popular and most of their fanbase do play games and read other gaming webcomics.

The "art" style is quite simple though.

If I think of anything better, I'll get back to ya.

Of course some people are gonna be jealous at Tim Buckley, it's like that: "The more succesful someone is, the more envy he gets from other people"...

Now if that success came from doing unethic things or crimes or something like that i understand the bashing, but what Tim did?? a webcomic, an animated series, organizing some events, and even invented a holiday (by the way, i know it's late but happy Winter-een-mass), if i want to be bigger in the gaming webcomics world, believe me, the last thing i do is bashing others...
Roberto Duran, Mariano Rivera, Ruben Blades, Justine Pasek, Rod Carew, Ramiro Mendoza, Los Rabanes, El General, The Canal, Flex, Match & Daddy, El Roockie, Eddy Lover, Irving Saladino, Laffit Pincay, Danilo P?©rez, Omar Alfano... to name a few...
