So Long, Gary

Postby pierski » Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:25 am

Gary Gygax, the co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons and father of the role-playing game, passed away yesterday. Without Gygax's brilliance games like Final Fantasy, Dragonquest and World of Warcraft would have never existed. Dungeons & Dragons is the true foundation of all modern role-playing games. So thank you Gary. Without you our gaming world would have been a lot less fun.

For this comic, I decided to go for true D&D joke. In fact, a friend of mine who has forgotten more about D&D than I've ever learned was like "huh... I didn't know that" after I explained it.

So why was it ironic that Satan was using the 2nd Edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rulebook? Because all mentions of demons and devils were removed from this edition to appease Christian zealots who were attacking D&D for Satan worshiping and such at the time. And now you know.

Matt Diagle IMed me about it on Tuesday and as soon as I heard about it I started planning the comic. Just didn't want to wait Thursday. I wanted to get the comic out as soon as possible.

Gary Gygax wasn't all that thrilled with newer editions of the game actually. He would have prefered to play in 1st edition, his edition.

The character sheet in God's hand is a classic character sheet.

Not having played D&D, I didn't get the joke. However, I did really like the art in this one.

I never really played D&D, probably about once.... I got the joke and it was pretty good without mocking the fact he'd passed away.

I was a bit surprised O didn't do a comic about it but he saved his tribute for his comment underneath the comic.

Also I noticed you changed the map.

The map will probably change again tonight as well or more so have additions. I'll explain it afterwards.

Is it a bad thing if I understood that comic in its entirety?

I don't think so. But my opinion might be jaded.
