How the current home consoles got their names...
And that's how the current generation consoles got their name... at least in my opinion. Well, I can guarantee that my assumptions of almost two thirds of them are correct. I wonder which ones aren't?
To change of subject, I just got a reproduction copy of the 1990 Nintendo World Championship cartridge from RetroZone in the mail. I've been waiting a very long time to get a hold of one of these babies. Granted it is not of the official ultra-rare golden version or even one of the lesser rare but still extremely rare itself gray version. But it is the next best thing for someone who's not in the mood to shell out almost $10k for an NES game... yet.
Well, I'm off to play said cartridge as it just came in the mail moments ago. See you on Monday... Oh, yeah! BIG announcement Monday as well. See you then!

An here i thought the Nintendo executives were naming the console after a penis joke or a slang term of a drug... Ohhh i miss the time when it was called Revolution...
Roberto Duran, Mariano Rivera, Ruben Blades, Justine Pasek, Rod Carew, Ramiro Mendoza, Los Rabanes, El General, The Canal, Flex, Match & Daddy, El Roockie, Eddy Lover, Irving Saladino, Laffit Pincay, Danilo P?©rez, Omar Alfano... to name a few...

3 follows 2 in the natural number system... Now if we're talking about rational, irrational or complex then you tell me which one follows 2 (Although, it will be nice to have a Playstation x > 2 )
This looks like a XKCD thread

It could have been a doubled pattern system... PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 8, so on...

Let the joke-ruining commence!
I saw, before the announcement on the Nintendo of America website, the announcement on the Nintendo of Japan website, and got a friend to translate. Reconstructing from memory, this is roughly what it said:
"This new console is going to be about a family playing games together. We chose the word "We" from English to represent this togetherness. [In Japanese, it's spelled "Wii".] Also, the "ii" represents two people together, and the "W" two people facing each other, emphasizing the four-player capability of the console and reinforcing the togetherness message."
Further, the website listed the name of the console as "ヰイー" (again if I remember right), using the katakana for "Wii", which is reserved exclusively for foreign words. If they were using a native Japanese word, it would have been "ゐいー", using the hiragana character set.
I want my 回転 back!

Well, if you want to believe the "man's" reason for the naming... Here is their reason behind the Xbox 360's name:
IGN wrote:The New Name
In generating a name for the system, the team threw out Xbox 2. "We've shifting the power of the gaming systems from technology to hardware to the gamer being the center of the industry, and Xbox 2 just sounds like it fits into that old scheme. We threw it out."
After numerous attempts, the team favorite became Xbox 360 because, among other reasons, it puts gamers at the center of the circle. So they decided to try it out, give it a sort of Rorschach test. Microsoft went to the public -- gamers and non-gamers, the second gamer in the household, the NASCAR dad and the soccer mom, as Allard says -- and asked them what they thought of when they heard the name "360."
One survey taker said, "Um, the first time I kissed my girlfriend on a Ferris wheel." Another responder said, "I love music. The word 360 makes me think of vinyl. Another said, "The first time I landed a kickflip on my skateboard." Another said, "When I exchanged rings with my husband in our vows, and I understood the significance of the ring, you know, a lifetime commitment." The answers, the team learned, were wildly different because of the unconventional name. But they all connected with a theme -- they were all emotional, personal experiences that evoked joy. "So, the reason we went in was different than the reason we came out."

Yeah, in all honesty... I think it would've been better if the Playstation 3 joke came last. It's the most solid, blunt joke. Like, "Oh-ho, two witty remarks, and one to make you giggle at the end," just faking out someone into thinking of some clever wit before they see it.
