Burn Me Once, Shame On You, Burn Me Thrice, Skin Graft...

So why are we already talking about Dragon Quest X being developed for the Wii [link] when Dragon Quest IX is still over three months away from being released in Japan? And that's not even saying when it when it will be released here in the western world. Ugh...

Dragon Quest IX for the Wii, in my opinion, is a bad idea. Dragon Quest IX on the DS, I am fine with that. The DS has proven itself to be a good RPG console (previous discussion of such here). But I want another real Dragon Quest game and not some Wiified version of an old favorite.

Yes, it could work on the Wii... graphics wise and power wise. But since Square-Enix is trying to appeal to a larger demographic with this incarnation, I think the end result will not live up to the expectations.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. The Nintendo DS has proven itself time and time again. The Wii is still a household gimmick. A popular household gimmick. But a gimmick nonetheless.

First (that's what i said to my ex's new boyfriend) XD

I think Square Enix just followed Capcom's decision to put Monster Hunter 3 on the Wii, Dragon Quest is a franchise mainly for Japan (Unlike Final Fantasy that gets a lot of sales from the West too), and there, the Wii is the only console that is moving some core software besides the casual-5 (handhelds are selling software like crazy but consoles are really behind), besides, the franchise itself doesn't demand High-End graphics (that's why it was no problem to put a main game on the DS), so they figured "what the hell"...

Satoru Iwata also said that he's putting a team to move DQ on the West, this guy is brilliant, not only he reconciles with SE after Hiroshi Yamauchi alienated Square and pushed over to Sony (with the cartridges issue, cancellation of SMRPG in Europe and other stuff), he is even willing to take that to the next level by bringing them more sales, and that translates on more sales to them and more 3rd party love, congrats Iwata...

BTW, i hope Level-5 keeps developing DQ titles...

the one downside to this comic is you can see the ending in peripheral vision so it ruins the supprise :(

Yeah, this is one that would work so well as an animation.

true you should consider doing some animated comics every once and while :P it would add a nice little charm and give you some more flexibility with random motion jokes

I wouldn't mind having a string of Quina lights myself for the holidays.

Well, if you want a Wiified bastardization of Dragon Quest, look no further than Dragon Quest Swords. And for a DSization, Rocket Slime.

I think (at least hope...) that Squeenix would realize that Dragon Quest does not need innovative controls to work well. Maybe some for minigames, since the series has had some of those lately, but I wouldn't imagine anything being tossed in just for the sake of the Wiimote.

I could be entirely wrong, of course. We'll probably have a better idea after actually playing DQIX. If IX and X are anything like VIII, then *swoon*.

Yeah, if they're like VIII I will be a happy camper myself. It is being created by Level 5 as well. So hopes are good.

I felt like adding my two cents. If a game is made right for the Wii, then the end result is something truly amazing, in most cases funner than any game for the other consoles. I refer you to exhibit A: Mario Galaxies. I'm sure not everyone would agree, but that was the last truly fun game I played.

However, when it is not made right, then all you have is a steaming turd with motion controls. Example of not being made right, I can't think of a game, but pretty much anything with unnecessary or unthought-out motion controls.

One last thing, the system itself is not a gimmick, but a lot of the games sure feel that way.

Fair enough. You should only use the Wiimote waggle if it makes the game better.

Exactly, they should release a traditional controller, only wireless, they can use the Gamecube design... Only use the Wiimote for games that work well with it...

But in suggesting a traditional controller, although many of us would most certainly prefer that for control to the bile that's been spewed out when a Wii game is made just for the sake of having motion control, that would go against everything the Wii has tried to be as it is anyway.

It [the Wii] is targeting a different demographic of users than the standard 'gamer'; this isn't good, this isn't bad, this is Nintendo's business, and they've done an awfully good job at selling their product. From the traditional 'gaming' sense, yes, the Wii is a gimmick. But people thought video game systems were gimmicks that would never last years ago as well, and look how far that's come.

I like to think this is just the first run at implementing motion controls as a mainstream concept in video games, and with every first run there's bound to be more terrible than excellent. But as long as the precedent has been set, you can see the competing companies competing and expanding upon that concept in the future, since when done correctly the motion control adds to the 'immersion' that many crave. The Wii just has the [un]fortunate distinction of being the first to push it out in major competition.

The same thing is happening with the Wii that happened with the DS. All the developers have been stupid and wrote it off and have been shoveling junk at it....until a certain point when people realize, holy fuck it's sold a lot of consoles. If you looke at DS releases, there really wasn't anything all that amazing until after the second year.
