Based on an Actual IM Conversation
I swear he said "lame-o".
A friend of mine was lucky enough to be online at the right time to get a Wii from Circuit City last Thursday. He had couple questions pertaining to the system. And the above is the conversation that actually transpired. I liked it. So I copied it and made it into today's comic.
WiiNintendo did an article about the Wii component cables vs the bundled composite cables a while back and it is definitely worth seeing/reading. After that I knew I definitely needed to get me some component cables. With that said, I just picked up a pair of component cables for my Wii for $5.78 at DealExtreme. From what I've read about them, they're actually pretty good. Not a bad price either.

3 IN A ROW!!!
Good comic, i luv the console dialogue ones
Component Cables are better because they divide the Video signals in different cables and makes them stronger, the composite ones (AV) join the signals together with a consecuence of losing quality, that's why my VCR uses S-Video cables and my DVD player uses component... And with the Wii lacking High-Def, it's good to have at least Enhanced-Def with the component signal

I was pretty surprised to find out that the $500 PS3 doesn't come with component cables. Nor do they even include an S-Video cable. It's supposed to be this top of the line hardware with amazing graphical capabilities and Hi-def output, and they give you standard RCA cables. Great.

Sony knew that most people were going to buy the PS3 as a blu-ray player. And if you're going to use a Blu-Ray player on an HD-TV you're going to want HDMI cables to go with it. This way anyone can use the A/V cables and the people with the HDs can get the HDMIs.

I got some component cables for my Wii and it really does help with the visual quality, sharpening up some of the ol' Virtual Console games. Irony!

I just use the standard cables, because hey, I'm lazy. Plus I have a crappy TV anyway.

You see, this is one thing Microsoft got (at least partially, among all the other bad things,) right. The XBOX supported 720p out of the box, and the 360 supports 1080p -OR- any *GA resolution between VGA and WUXGA. It even comes with composite/component cables if you buy any package other than Core/Arcade, and newer models have built-in HDMI. (Why earlier models didn't, even though they had the pins on the board, is beyond me, but still...) Meanwhile, Nintendo is just sticking with max EDTV, and even then for all Dolphins sold after 2003 they pulled component video support. Sony even got this right too, although not having a component-in-box package is pretty lame. Things just look better in high qual.
(Computer gamers drive their screens at in excess of 800x600 now, and computers aren't even specialized for gaming. Why are any dedicated gaming systems still stuck in 704x480 max?)

I can answer that last one.
Computer Systems have monitors, and the monitors are based on pixel resolution and RGB signals, they got to 800x600 back in the 80s (though it was only 4-bit, they got to 32 bit in late 90s) and today they have QXGA resolutions (2048x1536) so the games developed for PCs had this advantage for a while now.
Consoles depend on TVs, and HDTV wasn't a reality for average households until the new millenium hit, and still today HDTVs are not a mayority, people around the world with consoles still have Analog TVs with the NTSC format (480i) or PAL (576i), so for the consoles is hard to do the transition, and for Nintendo is even harder because they always have an issue with some thing because when they focus on some thing they forget about the other ones.

I don't know, but now that you mention it, there's a site devoted to modding the Atari 2600 to use different signals than the RF one (Audio+Video combined in one coaxial cable) they managed to put S-Video on the thing!!!

But you can just return it, or at least that's the way that works here, if it's open it goes to store credit...
